Suzy Monford’s Vision for Grocery Retail

Suzy Monford, Chairman and CEO of Heritage Grocers Group, leads by a straightforward yet powerful philosophy: “Doing the right thing in the right way.” This mantra guides her in the diversified grocer, which includes Cardenas Markets, El Rancho Markets, and Tony’s Fresh Markets.

Food became an early passion for Monford, from university restaurant work to finding her retail love at Central Market, a division of HEB. “It really is sort of the Disneyland of food retailing,” she recalls, emphasizing quality and unique shopping experiences. This foundation shapes her leadership at Heritage Grocers Group, where fresh, handmade food is a daily commitment.

A Dynamic Industry

International experience whetted Monford’s skills in innovation and “stores of the future.” She learned the importance of strong teams, attracting talent, and customer-centric models. As the grocery industry changes, some things stay the same: building great teams, attracting top talent, and putting the customer first. The rapid pace of technology demands leaders to be both merchants and tech-savvy strategists.

Mentorship, Wellbeing, and Teamwork

Mentorship has been a constant. Monford values formal and informal mentors, believing learning comes from anyone.

Monford prioritizes wellbeing, starting each day with a 20–30-minute workout and healthy breakfast. “Our industry today is all about having a lot of energy,” she says. “Health and wellness have to come first.”

Teamwork is the core of Monford’s leadership. She measures success by team synergy and collaboration. “The best type of day is…great team meetings where we had synergy, alignment, great brainstorming,” she says. She fosters a “one team” approach, recognizing that collaboration fuels innovation.
