Northgate González Market Lynwood Opens, Boosting Jobs and Food Access

Northgate González Market Lynwood store officially opened this week, marking a major milestone for the family-owned grocer. The 36,974-square-foot location transforms a long-vacant, environmentally remediated site into a modern supermarket, expanding access to fresh food and creating hundreds of local jobs.

The Northgate González Market Lynwood project sits on a property that had been vacant for years due to environmental contamination. Extensive cleanup, supported by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, turned the site into a safe, productive space for the neighborhood.

DTSC Director Katherine Butler highlighted that projects like this demonstrate how environmental remediation can turn risky properties into valuable community assets, creating economic and social benefits for residents.

Strategic Expansion Across Southern California

This opening strengthens Northgate González Market’s presence in Los Angeles County and advances its long-term growth strategy in dense, culturally diverse communities.

The Northgate González Market Lynwood store features signature departments, including Tortillería La González, Pastelería La González, and Carnitas Don Miguel, differentiating the chain in the competitive Latino grocery sector.

Co-President Oscar González said the store reflects the company’s investment in operational innovation and an elevated fresh-prepared foods program, bringing high-quality products to communities that full-service grocers have historically underserved.

The Northgate González Market Lynwood location emphasizes fresh-prepared Mexican foods, a core part of the company’s identity. The store includes a tamalería producing scratch-made masa with traditional volcanic stone grinding, an expanded tortillería crafting fresh tortillas and seasonal chips, a bakery with daily pan dulce and tres leches cakes, and a full carnicería with premium cuts and the signature carne asada program.

Additionally, the store offers one of the region’s largest selections of dried and fresh chiles, herbs, and spices, reinforcing Northgate González Market’s leadership in culturally focused grocery retail.

Northgate González Market Lynwood Supports Local Schools

To mark the opening, Northgate González Market donated $50,000 to the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation to fund scholarships and teacher grants. The company also provided $5,000 in children’s books to local schools in partnership with author Patty Rodriguez.

Executives confirmed plans to open additional Southern California locations in Stanton and La Mirada in 2026. These expansions reflect the company’s ongoing strategy to serve communities seeking culturally relevant grocery experiences.
