Lidl Opens its 100th Supermarket in the US

The German discount supermarket chain Lidl will be opening its 100th store in the United States this Wednesday, May 27.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the supermarket chain is not going to celebrate the opening with a special event, as it has done on previous occasions. The new Lidl supermarket is located at 2985 Peachtree Parkway, Suwanee, Georgia, and will be open seven days a week from 8 am to 8 pm.

This is the third Lidl supermarket to open in Gwinnett County and the sixth in Georgia. The company also has stores in Marietta and Mableton and is building a regional distribution center in Covington that is expected to employ 270 people. More than 200 people work for Lidl stores in Georgia, according to a press release.

“We are grateful for Lidl’s expanding investment in Georgia, and more than ever, we appreciate how important it is for Georgians to have access to high-quality food at an affordable price,” said Gov. Brian Kemp in a press release. “We also appreciate the commitment of this store and so many others to maintain proper health guidelines so they can operate safely, keep people employed, and meet critical needs during COVID-19.”

The German discount supermarket chain reported that in order to maintain the safety of its employees and its customers during the coronavirus pandemic, it has increased cleaning and sanitizing procedures in all of its stores. They also maintain social distancing rules and control the number of shoppers within the supermarket at five customers per 1,000 square feet.

Protective shields were installed at checkout lanes to protect customers and team members during the checkout process, and employees wear masks and gloves.

The inauguration “represents an important milestone in our mission to deliver outstanding quality products at the lowest possible prices to our customers in the United States,” Roman Heini, Chairman of Lidl US, said in a press release. “We plan to continue to build new stores, ramp up our hiring efforts, and expand our network of distribution centers to reach even more customers in the years ahead. We look forward to forging new and strong relationships with everyone who helps make our journey possible.”
