Champions for Health Honors Northgate Gonzalez Market with President’s Award

San Diego nonprofit Champions for Health honored Northgate Gonzalez Market with its prestigious President’s Award at its recent Waves of Wellness Soiree to raise money for its life-saving program.

Northgate Gonzalez Market has been a major community partner for Champions for Health Immunizations and health screening programs for almost a decade, according to a press release. The Latino-themed grocery store chain serves as a community hub in San Diego’s health equity zones.

“Northgate Market has always been an active part of the communities where their stores are located. They provide employment, cultural foods, and ambiance, which make their stores so inviting. They know that healthy food and preventive health services make for a healthy and happy community,” said Champions for Health Executive Director Adama Dyoniziak.

Accepting the award on behalf of the company was Northgate Gonzalez Market Co-President Miguel González.

“We are deeply honored to be recognized by such an esteemed organization as Champions for Health,” Gonzalez said. “Every year we are proud to partner with them to bring the Love Your Heart blood pressure screenings in Southern California. Our family has made it a priority for the company to be part of the community and help ensure people have access to health information, fresh produce, and other essential items to live a well-balanced life.”

Northgate Market also shows their heart in how they treat their employees. During Champions for Health COVID vaccination events, Northgate Market provided Lyft rides for their employees who are elderly to remove transportation as a barrier to receiving their vaccine.

“Northgate Gonzalez Market are quiet leaders in their community, giving back to ensure a vibrant populace,” Dyoniziak added.
