3 Reasons to Consume Dairy Products

For some people, the belief that the consumption of dairy products contributes to increased cholesterol is a difficult misconception to set aside. But critics of such products should be aware that the appropriate dairy products, consumed in moderation, can be beneficial to your health for various reasons.

The consumption of dairy products as part of a diet rich in nutrients is important for people of all ages. Dairy products contain many nutrients that are essential for good health. Calcium, proteins, phosphorus, potassium and supplemented vitamins A and D are all nutrients that the body needs. Calcium, for example, is essential for the formation and maintenance of strong bones.

1. Dairy products help fight against osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and makes them more susceptible to fractures, can affect anyone. However, it is particularly common among women over 50 years. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says that 50% of women and 25% of men over 50 suffer fractures due to osteoporosis. To maintain bone strength, health professionals recommend a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, which are found in dairy products.

2. Dairy consumption can reduce the risk of cancer.

The consumption of low-fat dairy foods may reduce the risk of cancer. Several studies show that populations consuming foods rich in calcium experience a lower incidence of colorectal cancer. According to Dr. Sears, expert on children’s health, calcium controls the proliferation of epithelial cells lining the colon. The rapid multiplication of these cells increases the risk of cancer. Among the best sources of calcium are lean fish and dairy products such as yogurt.

Dairy consumption, especially milk, provides other important health benefits. Drinking milk protects the enameled surface of teeth from acidic substances. This helps prevent tooth decay and the weakening of enamel.

Milk and other dairy products also contribute to healthy skin.

3. Dairy consumption aids in digestion.

Dairy consumption also plays an important role in digestive health. It helps reduce heartburn. The varieties of yogurt with active cultures promote healthy digestion and relieve occasional irregularities.

People with lactose intolerance, a sensitivity disorder when there are inadequate levels of lactase in the body needed to dissolve the lactose sugar in dairy products, should avoid such foods. However, data supplied by the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board  (WMMB) states that lactose-intolerant individuals can consume at least two cups of milk daily, if they are accompanied by food and are ingested at different times. Studies also indicate that by consuming small amounts of foods that contain lactose, the condition may improve over time. Dairy products like milk, cheese, yogurt, ice creams and even cream can provide much of the daily recommended intake of essential vitamins and minerals.
