Sprouts Farmers Market’s CEO succession is official: Nick Konat takes command in January 2027, ending Jack Sinclair’s eight-year run at the top of one of the country’s fastest-growing specialty grocers.
The Phoenix-based retailer announced that Konat, its current president and chief operating officer, will assume the role of CEO, on January 4, 2027, the first day of Sprouts’ 2027 fiscal year. Sinclair moves into the role of executive chairman, remaining involved without holding day-to-day operational authority.
This is a planned succession, not a surprise exit. Still, for a retailer that has staked its identity on disciplined differentiation in a crowded natural and organic grocery market, the leadership shift carries real stakes.
Who Is Nick Konat?
Konat joined Sprouts in March 2022 as president and COO, overseeing operations, marketing, merchandising, supply chain, and innovation. That portfolio is essentially the entire operating engine of a grocery chain.
Before Sprouts, he spent over six years at Petco Health and Wellness, eventually serving as chief merchandising officer. Prior to that, he spent 9 years at Target Corporation in food, fashion, and planning roles. He also spent six years at Accenture.
His background is squarely in merchandising and operations, the disciplines that determine whether a specialty grocer’s carefully curated assortment actually connects with shoppers at the shelf level.

Sinclair’s Legacy: Transformation Under Pressure
Sinclair took the CEO role in 2019, just months before the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped grocery retail overnight. Under his tenure, Sprouts sharpened its focus on its core health-and-wellness shopper, pulled back from broad promotional strategies that diluted its differentiation, and invested in new store formats and geographies.
The company now operates more than 480 stores across 25 states. Employs approximately 36,000 team members, according to the announcement.
Board chairman Joe Fortunato credited Sinclair with guiding Sprouts “through a significant phase of transformation and value creation.”
Sinclair, for his part, framed the timing as intentional. “The Board and I have spent significant time and consideration developing our succession plan, and we believe that now is the right time to transition Sprouts to its next generation of leadership,” he said in the announcement.
What the Transition Signals for Sprouts’ Strategy
Konat inherits a company with momentum, and a market environment that is getting harder to navigate. Specialty grocery operates in an increasingly contested space, with conventional supermarkets expanding their natural and organic offerings, private-label quality rising across the board, and inflation-weary consumers scrutinizing every basket.
Konat acknowledged the complexity directly. “We remain focused on executing our growth strategy, expanding into new markets and strengthening our connection with customers as we navigate an evolving consumer environment,” he said.
A Structural Note Worth Watching
Joe Fortunato will also assume the role of lead independent director beginning January 4, 2027. A governance shift that often signals a board’s intent to maintain closer oversight during leadership transitions.
That structure, a new CEO, an executive chairman with direct institutional knowledge, and a newly designated lead independent director, gives Sprouts a dense leadership layer at the top. Whether that translates to continuity and stability or creates friction in decision-making is a question only time will answer.
