Goya Foods Names New Director to Lead DSD Sales

Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the U.S., has named Miguel A. Abreu as its new DSD Sales Director, effective immediately.

The appointment recognizes Abreu’s nearly three decades of contributions to the company.

Co-President Peter Unanue praised the decision without hesitation. “Miguel’s dedication, leadership, and deep-rooted understanding of our business make him the ideal choice,” Unanue said.

Unanue added that Abreu “embodies the values of our company” and has driven sustained growth throughout his tenure.

A Career Built from the Ground Up

Abreu joined Goya in 1998 as an Independent Sales Broker. Within a year, he earned a promotion to Territory Manager.

He then steadily climbed through roles, including Sales Manager, District Manager, and Sales Account Manager.

That 27-year journey shaped a leader known for mentoring talent and delivering measurable results.

Senior Vice President Joe Perez highlighted those qualities directly. “His strategic mindset and collaborative approach have made a lasting impact,” Perez said.

Perez also credited Abreu with building meaningful partnerships across every level of the organization.

From Santo Domingo to a National Leadership Role

Abreu’s story begins far from the food retail industry. He was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and immigrated to New Jersey at 13.

He later attended Jersey City State College, establishing his academic foundation in the region.

Before joining Goya, he spent eight years in a managerial role at Foodtown Supermarkets. That early experience sharpened his operational instincts and leadership style.

It also gave him a frontline perspective that continues to inform his decision-making today.

Strengthening Goya’s DSD Sales Strategy

As the new Goya Foods DSD Sales Director, Abreu now oversees a critical distribution channel.

Direct Store Delivery operations demand precision, speed, and strong relationships with retailers.

Abreu brings all three to the role. “I am truly honored to step into this position,” Abreu said in a statement.

He added that nearly three decades with Goya have given him a deep appreciation for the company’s culture.

“I look forward to driving growth, strengthening partnerships, and building on Goya’s incredible 90-year legacy,” he said.

A Legacy Brand Investing in Leadership

Founded in 1936, Goya Foods has grown into a dominant force in Latin American food. The company manufactures, packages, and distributes more than 2,500 high-quality food products.

Its portfolio draws from culinary traditions across Spain, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and South America.

Today, Goya products reach consumers through thousands of retail locations nationwide.

Appointing seasoned insiders like Abreu signals the company’s commitment to continuity and strategic growth.

His promotion also reflects a broader organizational philosophy: develop talent from within and reward sustained performance. Abreu’s familiarity with both store-level execution and senior strategy makes him a well-rounded leader.

For the Hispanic food segment, one of the fastest-growing in U.S. retail, strong DSD management matters enormously. Goya’s move reinforces its position at the forefront of that growth.
