Northgate González Market celebrated the groundbreaking of a new supermarket in Lynwood, California, in an area previously listed as a food desert in Los Angeles County.
The new market will improve the Lynwood community’s access to fresh, healthy food and serve as a revitalization point for the area.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, executives from the Hispanic grocery chain were joined by former Governor Gray Davis, Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, and Lynwood Mayor José Luis Solache.
This new store was years in the making, as the location had to undergo extensive soil clean-up, remediation, and numerous regulatory reviews and approvals due to a previous gasoline station tenant. Despite the challenges, Northgate executives were committed to bringing a full-service grocery store.
“Northgate González Markets are an essential part of the fabric of Southern California,” said former California Governor and current counsel at Loeb & Loeb LLP Gray Davis. “I want to commend the González family for ensuring that communities like Lynwood have access to quality, affordable produce. Northgate Market overcame many obstacles to bring their incredible market, with fresh fruits and vegetables, to Lynwood.”

The new 36,974-square-foot store in Lynwood will redefine the shopping experience for residents and the local community. It will feature a large meat department, bakery, tortillería, fresh produce, prepared foods, a Taqueria, and an extensive selection of domestic and imported Latin American grocery goods, offering a unique taste of the Mexican homeland.

The Hispanic grocery store plans to hire more than 100 associates, most of them full-time. Residents of the City of Lynwood are expected to fill most of those positions.

Northgate González Market is best known for many authentically Mexican signature items, including prepared carne asada, chorizo, made-to-order guacamole, and our famous carnitas.
The new Northgate González Market store will offer:

- The fresh, colorful, and quality produce sections offer both traditional and unique varieties of fruits and vegetables and a five-day guarantee.
- An expanded chef’s selection of grab-and-go favorites, including traditional tortas, empanadas, and an assortment of wraps and sandwiches.
- An extensive butcher shop/carnicería where customers will find custom-cut meats, fresh marinated offerings, ready-to-cook entrees, authentic chorizos, and one of Southern California’s most extensive cheeses and crema selections.
- An expanded bakery/panadería with an assortment of freshly baked artisan bread, specialty cakes, dessert flans, and more! All are made hot and fresh every day.
- An extensive beer, wine, and tequila section where customers can find their favorite beverage.
- One of the most extensive seafood offerings around, including a variety of ceviche and shrimp cocktails – made with authentic recipes from around the world, as well as a large fresh seafood/pescadería section offering exciting fresh catches of the week.
