Chavez Supermarket Debuts 12th Bay Area Location

Chavez Supermarket Newark’s opening arrives at the right moment for Bay Area families preparing holiday meals. The new store opened on Friday, Nov. 14, according to a report from Tri-City Voice, giving Newark residents another full-service grocery option rooted in Hispanic food traditions.

The Bay Area, located in Northern California and surrounding the San Francisco Bay, continues to see steady demand for culturally relevant grocery options.

Chavez Supermarket, founded in 1984 by David Chávez, remains a family-run chain with 12 locations across this region. The company specializes in Hispanic groceries and fresh ingredients that reflect longstanding culinary traditions. Now, the Newark store expands that footprint while reviving a long-empty commercial space.

Store Replaces Vacant Big Lots Location

For more than a year, the building on Thornton Avenue sat empty after a Big Lots store shut down during the company’s bankruptcy. The new Chavez Supermarket in Newark gives the structure a second life and restores activity to the shopping center. This move also aligns with a broader regional effort to address lost storefronts across the Bay Area, where many communities face rising commercial vacancies.

Newark Vice Mayor Eve Marie Little told Tri-City Voice the renewed activity benefits residents and local businesses. “I am truly happy to see Chávez Supermarket join our city and breathe new life into a building that had been sitting empty for far too long,” she said. She added that the new store expands access to fresh goods, creates jobs for local families, and stimulates economic momentum citywide.

Grand Celebration Follows Initial Opening

Although customers have already been shopping the aisles, the official grand-opening celebration will take place Saturday, Dec. 6, and Sunday, Dec. 7. The event will feature Mariachi Mexicanisimo, children’s clown shows, food tastings, piñatas, and prize giveaways.

These festivities underscore the brand’s effort to connect with Newark residents. Moreover, the community-focused approach highlights Chavez Supermarket’s value for culture, tradition, and family-centered retail experiences.

Diverse Offerings Inside the Store

Inside, shoppers find a large selection of products from both the United States and Latin America. The store includes a full-service deli, fresh meat and seafood departments, and a bakery that prepares custom cakes. Chavez Taqueria, a flagship of the chain, offers a menu inspired by Mexican flavors, offering customers ready-to-enjoy meals rooted in authentic recipes.

In addition, the store offers a housewares section with essential culinary tools for Hispanic cooking, including tortilla presses and molcajetes. These items strengthen the supermarket’s mission to support cultural food preparation traditions while serving a broad customer base.

Community Growth and Local Impact

The Chavez Supermarket Newark opening brings more than a place to buy groceries; it signals economic recovery amid ongoing retail challenges across Northern California. Several Bay Area cities continue to struggle with empty storefronts, yet Newark shows that targeted investments can spark broader revitalization.

Convenient parking, a prime location, and strong brand recognition position the store for long-term success. Furthermore, the opening creates new jobs for residents and supports increased activity throughout the Thornton Avenue commercial corridor.

As families prepare for holiday gatherings, the community now has better access to fresh produce, meats, baked goods, and prepared foods. At the same time, Newark gains renewed commercial energy and optimism.
